Skype 5.2 beta officially released to public and it has minor improvements than version 5.1

In this tutorial, I will show you how to install the skype 5.2 beta version on ubuntu 16.04 / 17.04 and linuxMint

skype a free cross-platform application that provides the user with a modern internet telephony and instant messaging and it is based on VOIP technology.It is available for windows, MacOS and Linux Operating systems.

By using this application you can make free video and message to another skype contact as free.

What's New in Skype 5.2 beta

  • Fix for handling Join links (
  • Fix for language switching (Alt+Shift), which was sometimes triggering the application menu
  • Added the Conversation history exporter, which can back up your conversations from Skype for Linux v4.3 in HTML format. Just go to 'Tools->Export chat history from Skype 4.3' and try it out.

Installation steps:

Method 1: Deb file

You can download the skype package from the official site 

Once it is downloaded, install it by using the dpkg command
dpkg -i skypeforlinux-64.deb
Method 2: Using skype repo

Step 1: Check and install the transport-https package
dpkg -s apt-transport-https > /dev/null || bash -c "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https -y"
Step 2: Install the GPG key
curl | sudo apt-key add -
Step 3: Add skype repo to your PC
echo "deb [arch=amd64] stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list
Step 4: Update the repo
sudo apt-get update
Step 5: Install skype 5.2
sudo apt-get install skypeforlinux
