Install Darktable 2.4.0 On Ubuntu / Debian / Fedora / openSUSE

In this tutorial, I will show you how to install the latest version of darktable 2.4.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS,  / Debian / openSUSE and Fedora 27

darktable released a new version 2.4.0 which having new features, bug fixes and support for new devices etc.. , users are recommended to move to 2.4.0 from older versions

darktable is an open source application that provides both amateur and enthusiasts photographers with a virtual lightable and darkroom that allows them to manage their digital negatives in a single and handy database. 

It has been designed from the ground up to be used for developing RAW images from digital cameras.

 Changelog in this version 2.4.0

  • A new module for haze removal
  • The local contrast module can now be pushed much further, it also got a new local laplacian mode
  • Add undo support for masks and more intelligent grouping of undo steps
  • Blending now allows displaying individual channels using false colors
  • darktable now supports loading Fujifilm compressed RAFs
  • darktable now supports loading floating point HDR DNGs as written by HDRMERGE
  • We also added channel specific blend modes for Lab and RGB color spaces
  • The base curve module allows for more control of the exposure fusion feature using the newly added bias slider
  • The tonecurve module now supports auto color adjustment in RGB
  • Add absolute color input as an option to the color look-up table module
  • A new X-Trans demosaicing algorithm, Frequency Domain Chroma, was implemented.
  • You can now choose from pre-defined scheduling profiles for OpenCL
  • Speaking of OpenCL, darktable now allows to force-use OpenCL for a specific pixelpipe
  • XMP sidecar files are no longer written to disk when the content didn’t actually change. That mostly helps with network storage and backup systems that use files’ timestamps

Installation Steps

For Ubuntu

Step 1: Add the official repository
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-release
Step 2: Update the repository
sudo apt-get update
Step 3: Install darktable
sudo apt-get install darktable

For Debian

Debian repositories having the current version of 1.4.2 and Debian backport repositories having 1.6.9 version and it can be installed by using the below command
sudo apt-get install darktable

For Fedora 26 & 27

On Fedora, you can install it by using the below command
dnf install darktable

For openSUSE

openSUSE comes with darktable, for installing the latest version add the repo and install it.

The below repo is for tumbleweed if you are using different version replace openSUSE_Tumbleweed with your version with underscores
zypper addrepo graphics.repo
zypper refresh
zypper install darktable
