Install Pidgin 2.13.0 in Ubuntu 16.04 / LinuxMint

In this tutorial, I will show you how to install the latest version of Pidgin 2.13.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 / LinuxMint.

Pidgin is an open source IM messaging client that includes a wide range of benefits to users. It is available for Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X operating systems.

The below IM Protocols are supported:-

MPP/Jabber, IRC, ICQ, AIM, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Google Talk, MySpaceIM, Zephyr, Bonjour, MXit, Sametime, Groupwise, MSN, SIMPLE, Yahoo!, Yahoo! Japan, and Facebook.

Similar to other IM's these also contain custom smileys, room list, sending files, moods, sounds, custom themes and many more.

  • Better support for dark themes.
  • Fixed IPv6 links by not escaping []'s.
  • Only write buddy icons to the cache if they're not already cached.
  • Rejoin persistent chats after reconnect.
  • Made the WIN32 Transparency plugin work on all platforms.
  • Ensure search results buttons are labeled
  • Fix matching unicode smilies.
  • Correctly update mute/unmute status when the remote side mutes/unmutes us.
  • Rework the status icon blinking to not used deprecated API.
  • Don't allow adding a buddy to protocols that don't have an add_buddy callback.

Method 1: Via PPA

Step 1: Add the third-party PPA
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/backports
Step 2: Update the repos
sudo apt-get update
Step 3: Install Pidgin 2.13.0
sudo apt-get install pidgin

Method 2: Via Source

Step 1: Before proceeding the dependencies need to be installed
sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev libglib2.0-dev libglade2-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libfarstream-0.1-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libidn11-dev libmeanwhile-dev tk8.4-dev
Step 2: Download the source file
tar -xvf pidgin-2.13.0.tar.bz2 && cd pidgin-2.13.0
Step 3: Configure and compile it
make && make install
